Now that I’m back in that position again, I feel like I’m better-equipped to be handing out gift-giving advice.
With Lucy, we’ve gotten a bunch of wonderful gifts from people, and I’m incredibly grateful for all of them. There were a few we got this time, however, that really stood out for me.
Now, I realize that not everyone is in the same financial situation as we are. I do know, however, that having another baby often-times brings up concerns about money, whether you’re hurting for it or not. Paul is currently working on getting his Masters, and I’m staying home with the kids.
I don’t know if you guys know this, but the grad-school lifestyle is generally not one that is full of lobster and caviar.
We just don’t have much extra income that will let us buy a lot of the “fun stuff.” This is why when I received a gift card to Bath and Body Works from my in-laws this Christmas I was fairly ecstatic.
I know that Bath and Body Works is no Chanel, but the key here is that, for me, the products they provide are fairly frivolous. The store is full of girly smells and aromatherapy and pedicure kits. At home, we use Suave shampoo and conditioner and store-brand bar-soap because it’s cheap. By getting a gift card specifically to a store full of pretty-smelling body products, I now have no choice but to go pamper myself a little… and that gets me pretty excited.
The same goes for baby stuff. With Charlie, two of my best friends got together and bought us a big Burt’s Baby Bee gift basket. It was full of great-smelling baby stuff, and all of it was more expensive than what we were willing to spend on baby supplies.
Please, don’t get me wrong here. Baby clothing, money and Target gift cards are awesome gifts. For the first few weeks of Lucy’s life, we’ve been using disposable diapers, rather than our usual cloth. Why? Because of all the poop. We were given a huge stockpile of diapers with Charlie, so this time, we’ve been pretty horrified at how much money we’ve spent on disposables so far. This is where the money and gift cards are incredibly appreciated.
It just depends on what kind of gift you’re looking to give. The reason I got so excited about the Bath and Body Works gift card is because I can’t go and use it to buy toilet paper. It’s like a “get out of guilt free” card that lets you go buy something fun and special. If you want to be the one to give your new-mommy friend a little break from adulthood, get them a gift card to an expensive chocolate shop, or a fancy baby clothing store, or their favorite salon.
Sometimes, we just need a break from being responsible and practical… and there’s no more welcome time than when your days are filled with poopy diapers and kids who won’t sit down to eat their breakfast!
